Sentence comprehension in ageing and Alzheimer's disease

چکیده
The ability to correctly interpret complex syntax and long sentences is gradually impaired as people age. Typical ageing characterised by working memory deficits, which are thought play an important role in determining whether can be comprehended correctly, neurodegenerative conditions such Alzheimer's disease (AD) exacerbate these limitations. Furthermore, declines processing speed appear cause increasing difficulty the proper allocation of cognitive resources necessary for sentence processing. Typically adults may compensate deficits successfully when interpreting using semantics or intact functions, but AD patients exhibit too severe this occur. causes comprehension still contested, consist language-specific impairments general cognition impacting linguistic behaviour. In review, we aim give overview main markers domain comprehension, well discuss potential underlying factors that affect older speakers patients.

متن کاملSelf-paced reading and sentence comprehension in Parkinson’s disease
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is associated with disturbances in sentence processing, particularly for noncanonical sentences. The present study aimed to analyse sentence processing in PD patients and healthy control participants, using a word-by-word self-paced reading task and an auditory comprehension task. Both tasks consisted of subject relative (SR) and object relative (OR) sentences, with com...
متن کاملSentence Comprehension in Aphasia
We show in this chapter that selective aphasic deficits dissociate distinct language processing systems. To this end, we focus on disruptions of lexical access that appear to implicate initial stages of sentence comprehension. The analyses we present turn on comparisons between agrammatic (Broca's) aphasic patients and paragrammatic (Wernicke's) aphasic patients. By the former we mean roughly, ...
متن کاملAgreement Processes in Sentence Comprehension
Three experiments examined the processing of subject–verb agreement in sentence comprehension. Experiment 1 used a word-by-word self-paced moving window reading methodology, and participants read sentences such as The key to the {cabinet/cabinets} {was/were} rusty from many years of disuse. When the head noun (key), local noun (cabinet), and verb were all singular, reading times after the verb ...
متن کاملSemantic focus and sentence comprehension.
Reaction time to detect a phoneme target in a sentence was found to be faster when the word in which the target occurred formed part of the semantic focus of the sentence. Focus was determined by asking a question before the sentence; that part of the sentence which comprised the answer to the sentence was assumed to be focussed. This procedure made it possible to vary position offocus within t...
